THE PIANO LESSON

ON THE HEELS of last season's blockbuster hit, Sam Cooke: Forever Mr. Soul, playwright and director Kevin Ramsey returns to Wilmington to help us present this masterpiece from the late August Wilson, one of the towering giants of American drama. This play, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1990, is one of the pillars of Wilson's ten-play saga representing each decade of the African-American experience in the 20th century. In The Piano Lesson, the ghosts of slavery and family fight in this mythic battle for a beloved piano, which represents both a reminder of the past and the opportunity of the future.

“PRESERVING DELAWARE'S AFRICAN-AMERICAN EXPERIENCE"

Sunday, April 20, 2008
Time: 5:00pm (Approx.)

The Piano Lesson examines the dilemma one African-American family faces in 1930s between preserving the family history of slavery and moving on to claim opportunities in the present. Exploring this issue from a Delaware perspective, faculty and graduates from Delaware State University’s African-American Heritage Preservation program will give a presentation on the efforts to preserve and document the history of African-Americans in Delaware. In a pursuit fraught with emotional and historical landmines, what gets preserved and what gets left behind? Speakers include Robin Bodo, Flavia Rutkosky, and Dr. Bradley Skelcher. Special focus will be given to the issue of education-exploring the history of the schools of P.S. DuPont, Howard High School, and Delaware State University.
