DELAWARE YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL

Drum Roll Please for the
19th Annual Delaware Young Playwrights Festival Honorees

The Delaware Theatre Company is proud to announce the honorees for the 2008 Delaware Young Playwrights Festival. 2008 marks the 19th anniversary of the Delaware Young Playwrights Festival and its reach continues to be impressive. This year saw the submission of 523 plays from 733 playwrights — the most students to ever write for DYPF! Schools from all three Delaware counties participated.

To every student who turned in a first draft — Thank You! You make DYPF what it is. It takes courage to share your creative voice with the world and we would like to honor all of you, if even in a small way. Therefore…

From those epic numbers of first draft submissions, the competition was narrowed down to nine middle school semi-finalists and eight high school semi-finalists.  The Festival will culminate in late April and early May with a full-blown celebration of Delaware student creativity.  Please join us for the 2008 DYPF presentations:

A Special Note To All Semi-Finalists

We would like to thank the authors of all seventeen plays who came in to interview.  As always, we wish we could present all of your plays.  Each play had something important to say and each playwright had a creative way of telling a story.  But ultimately, we have to choose three middle school plays and three high school plays.  Please know that all honorable mentions, semi-finalists, and finalists will be recognized at the DYPF performances in May.  We also hope that all of you will continue writing.  And finalists, get ready to work.  You will be contacted shortly to schedule your first meeting and begin the final leg of your playwriting journey.

Each year, DTC challenges students to become active participants in the art of theatre by writing their own one-act play on a theme inspired by one of the shows in DTC's season.  By writing plays, students tell us what they think is going right in the world and what’s going wrong, what needs to be changed and what needs to be celebrated.
This year, the theme is:

“Just because someone’s young doesn’t
mean they don’t have anything to say.”

~ MARGOT, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
By Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, newly adapted by Wendy Kesselman

One of the many reasons a person might not feel fully respected is their age. With that in mind, students wrote a play in which the ideas, beliefs, feelings and/or contributions of a character are not taken seriously.
